When he played on the Billiard Congress of Wisconsin 9-ball tour, his opponents included professional players. He studied writing and journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. His first pool book, The Mind's Eye, took him into contact with professional players, cue makers and top billiard instructors. He used this expanding knowledge to become a monthly columnist for The American Cueist magazine. While writing these columns certain concepts began to repeat.
