A French Volunteer of the War of Independence, (The Chevalier de Pontgibaud)
This work is the Chevalier de Pontgibaud's detailed and intriguing account of his own life during which he ""aided American colonists to gain their independence.""

Born in 1758, the Chevalier was the son of the Lord of Pontgibaud. He spent some time in prison before escaping to America to help fight in the Revolution. Upon arriving at Valley Forge, the Marquis de la Fayette made the Chevalier an aide-de-camp with the rank of major. During the Revolution, he participated in several engagements, including the Battle of Monmouth. After returning to France, he was one of the first Revolutionary veterans to receive the Order of Cincinnatus. He died in 1837.

The Chevalier was a keen observer of men and events. The biographical notes included briefly describe the exploits and characters of people the Chevalier met throughout his life. A new full-name index has been added to this edition.
