One of the few indisputably great novels of the century. Mr Biswas is one of the great tragicomic characters of the century. Born into the expatriate Indian community in Trinidad, he is trained as a pundit, but fails in his vocation. He becomes a journalist, only to fail at that too. He marries into a large, all-enveloping family but remains an outsider within it. He's not an admirable character but anybody who reads this book will be the richer for having known him.
