The wandering son of a nihilistic philosopher saves a member of an all-female orchestra from indignity and despair, and in the process entangles himself in the very thing he had always hoped to avoid - life. As the actors retreat into their fate on an island in the South China Seas, the novel begins to read like a deadly farcical reworking of The Tempest, but without the sweetness or the salvation. One of the saddest stories ever told. Review by Howard Jacobson, whose books include 'The Mighty Waltzer' (Kirkus UK)
