Laurence Sterne's great masterpiece of bawdy humour and rich satire defies any attempt to categorize it, with a rich metafictional narrative that might classify it as the first 'postmodern' novel. Part novel, part digression, its gloriously disordered narrative interweaves the birth and life of the unfortunate 'hero' Tristram Shandy, the eccentric philosophy of his father Walter, the amours and military obsessions of Uncle Toby, and a host of other characters, including Dr Slop, Corporal Trim and the parson Yorick.

Reviews for Tristram Shandy

Very fashionable today, especially with those who see him as the father of postmodernism. Sterne is a rogue author, playing with his material, with novelistic conventions and with the reader; he intervenes directly when he feels like it and practises a scurrilous and often surrealistic wit. He is unabashedly comical about anything he chooses, especially if it was in his day, the mid-18th century, forbidden territory - marital sex, for instance. Review by Richard Hoggart, whose books include 'The Uses of Literacy' and 'First and Last Things' (Kirkus UK)
