A living legend of anime and manga, Leiji Matsumoto (born 1938) first won fame for his war manga in the early 1970s, before a meteoric rise in popularity thanks to his contributions to Space Battleship Yamato (1974), a space opera anime that would become an all-time classic, airing in the United States under the title Star Blazers. He won the Shogakukan Manga Award for his smash hit manga Galaxy Express 999 (1977), and his series Space Pirate Captain Harlock became an international hit, followed up by Queen Emeraldas (1978), which was set in the same universe. Matsumoto is well known to music fans as the director of Interstella 5555, the feature anime film he directed set to Daft Punk's seminal album Discovery.
