Eugene McCabe was born in Glasgow in 1930. His novel Death and Nightingales was published in 1992 to high praise. He has published five collections of short stories, one non-fiction book and a novella. He is also a successful playwright. Eugene McCabe lives in County Monaghan.
In his exceptional second novel, McCabe, a farmer by trade, joins the ranks of the great tradition of Irish storytellers. The historical divisions of Ireland are played out in this fine novel which pits the will of a wealthy Protestant landowner against that of the bastard child of his Catholic wife. The conflict is not only religious: it is the story of old respected families subjected to the will of the new rich; youthful desire pitted against an ageing, heavy heart; and the mixed attractions of loyalty and rebellion. The unthinkable action of one is met by the unthinkable action of the other in a closeted world of moral confusion and deep anguish. All logic and love of life are destroyed in this passionate and descriptive tale. Written in 1992, Death and Nightingales is a novel about Ireland that thoroughly deserves its growing status as a classic of our times. (Kirkus UK)
