Robert Swindells has produced another gripping drama with the fast paced A Wish for Wings. Thirteen-year-old Jenna has only one wish. She wants to be an airline pilot and prove her indifferent parents and dismissive brother that she's got what it takes and that it is not just a passing phase. She finds an ally in her recently bereaved grandfather and her dream brings him out of his depression for he too dreamed of being a flyer. He tells her of his childhood heroine, Amy Johnson, how he carved her name on the stone that Jenna walks past every day on her way to school, and he promises to support her in her ambition. But Jenna's dreams are stalled by problems at home. Her brother Ned has fallen in with the nasty Gavin Lassiter who is planning a robbery and when Granddad Larwood's gun is stolen it is left to Jenna to try and prevent Ned from making a terrible error. A Wish for Wings is an absorbing and gripping read full of the real life characters and situations that characterize much of Swindell's work. There are morals galore but no preaching and both Jenna and her grandfather are inspiring personalities. The short chapters make for a pacy read and as the story reaches a climax you'll be turning the pages at a rate of knots. (Kirkus UK)
