Reviews for Indians of the United States

This should prove an extremely useful book, for clearly, and with enough detail to make it colorful and interesting, the curator of anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History, traces not only the history of the individual tribes, but gives passing glimpses of their way of life. He does not pretend to make an exhaustive study of any tribe or tribes. But he does leave one with a general picture of the distinguishing marks, the ways of life, the present status of these people with a history older than our own. A bibliography at the close should prove a lead-on to readers. The part played by the white man in destroying the Indian way of life is not overlooked, and blame is placed where it belongs. Not confined to any one part of the country, but covering all parts. This volume is the first of a science series. (Kirkus Reviews)
