Pat Hutchins has always loved drawing and at the age of 16, won a scholarship to Darlington Art School. She is now one of the most popular picture book creators in the world with over 30 children's books published after the success of her classic Rosie's Walk.
'It was like this,' Avril interrupted. 'Miss Beaver left her bag on the bus! . . .' 'Then it got mixed up with the robber,' Morgan added. 'And when they realized, they dressed up as Mr. and Mrs. Ramsbottom. . .' said Dominic. 'And locked the real farmer and his wife in the bedroom,' said Akbar. 'And don't forget the chase,' Jessica chimed in, 'where we nearly crashed lots of times and they'd got teacher on the bus and were threatening her with a gun, and. . .' 'But it was the licorice balls what did it really,' Avril interrupted as the reporter looked at them blankly. And that about sums up this manic bit of fluff that begins with the second grade setting out to visit a farm and ends with the children cheered and rewarded for capturing a pair of bank robbers. If The House That Floated Away (1975) left you unmoved, then this, which is more like a TV mad chase spoof, will never seem to get into gear - and the absence of a particular protagonist, though it could work on TV, might make it harder for other second graders to hook on. Still it moves to beat 60, with plenty of jolts and never a pause for breath. (Kirkus Reviews)
