INDIE Awards Shortlist 2014

Posted January 30, 2014

The Indie Awards 2014 books at Abbey's Bookshop 131 York Street, Sydney

Australian Independent Booksellers (of which Abbey's is most definitely one) are pleased to announce The Shortlist for The Indie Awards 2014.

The Indie Awards are awarded by the Australian Independent Booksellers and sees independent booksellers (like Abbey's) take their rightful place in the spotlight as key supporters of Australian authors. The incredible passion and knowledge of independent booksellers (like Lindy, Greg, Meg, Sian, Christian, Dave, Jess, Peter and Hector) makes them uniquely placed to judge and recommend the best Australian books of the past year to their customers and the general reading public.

The category winners and the overall ‘Book of the Year’ winner will be announced in Sydney on Wednesday, 26 March 2014 at an awards ceremony.

Here's what the authors have to say:

"Good Australian writing needs good Australian bookshops to prosper. Without them Australian writers are one more endangered species whose bush has been bulldozed."
Richard FlanaganThe Narrow Road to the Deep North

"When you travel widely, as I do, in the States, the UK and Europe, you realise that Australian authors are blessed by having the support of the strongest independent book industry in the world."
Alex MillerCoal Creek

"Independent bookstores led the charge with The Rosie Project. As a debut author, I relied on personal recommendations by booksellers, particularly independent booksellers, rather than an established reputation. The independent booksellers found the time to read a book by an unknown local author and recommend it on the basis of their own judgment. Independent means what it says - we need people making independent judgments about books to find and champion the local, the specialised, the unusual." Graeme SimsionThe Rosie Project
