With the assistance of Garry’s partner, Angela Emslie, The Shannon Company has compiled a selection of papers, speeches, poems and even a few songs penned by Garry Weaven over the course of his 40-year connection to the superannuation industry.

Combined with a few photographs and some enlightening press clippings, this collection tells a story written, as it were, between the lines, of the remarkable journey of Australia’s superannuation system and provides glimpses of the spirit of the person who has undoubtedly been one of its leading lights.

“The story of the Industry Super Funds movement and the undeniable, life changing impact it has made on the lives of millions of Australian workers and their loved ones is an important story. Yet, with its layers of complexity and necessary adaptation, it was a relatively difficult narrative to understand and consume, until now. Weaven Words tells the story of the remarkable growth and development of Superannuation in Australia in an enjoyable and digestible way. Whether you simply pick up this book to browse through, or focus on a specific article or speech, or even enjoy a line or two of poetry, all will reveal the super charged mind of Garry Weaven. Industry Super has famously been referred to as the Super of the Future.  I am certain this book will be part of that future.”

Garry Weaven is the founder and recently retired Chair of IFMInvestors, a global funds management company and a world leading infrastructure investor, owned by a consortium of Australia’s industry superannuation funds. As Assistant Secretary of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) in the 1980’s, Garry played a seminal role in establishing some of today’s major industry funds and campaigning for employer-funded superannuation across the workforce. After a brief period of consulting for Westpac Financial Services, the Committee For Melbourne and others he established, in 1994, Industry Fund Services which became the catalyst for a range of collectively owned organisations and activities.  Garry also served as a foundation board member of Melbourne’s Docklands Authority and the Federal Government’s Infrastructure Australia and co-founded The New Daily, a free on-line daily news service. Today Garry continues his interest in responsible investing and encouraging the superannuation industry to address Australia’s affordable housing crisis. He lives with his partner Angela Emslie in Melbourne’s CBD.
