Our search has the following Google-type functionality:
+ (addition symbol)
If you use '+' at the start of a word, that word will be present in the search results.
eg. Harry +Potter
Search results will contain 'Potter'.
- (minus symbol)
If you use '-' at the start of a word, that word will be absent in the search results.
eg. Harry -Potter
Search results will not contain 'Potter'.
AND
If you use 'AND' between 2 words, then both those words will be present in the search results.
eg. Harry AND Potter
Search results will contain both 'Harry' and 'Potter'.
OR
If you use 'OR' between 2 words, then either or both of those words will be present in the search results.
eg. 'Harry OR Potter'
Search results will contain just 'Harry', or just 'Potter', or both 'Harry' and 'Potter'.
NOT
If you use 'NOT' before a word, that word will be absent in the search results. (This is the same as using the minus symbol).
eg. 'Harry NOT Potter'
Search results will not contain 'Potter'.
" " (double quotation marks)
If you use double quotation marks around words, those words will be present in that order.
eg. "Harry Potter"
Search results will contain 'Harry Potter', but not 'Potter Harry'.
* (asterisk)
If you use '*' in a word, it performs a wildcard search, as it signifies any number of characters. (Searches cannot start with a wildcard).
eg. 'Pot*er'
Search results will contain words starting with 'Pot' and ending in 'er', such as 'Potter'.

Winifred Holtby was a prolific journalist and writer whose most famous work South Riding is on many university courses. She was an active campaigner for several progressive causes during the inter-war period such as pacifism, feminism and most important to her, racial equality and harmony in South Africa. She was the subject of Vera Britain's Testament of Friendship. She was essentially a 'woman in her time' and yet could also be seen as an index to many of the progressive movements which were around in the pre-war days and in this sense she was indeed a 'clear stream'. Written in a wonderfully accessible style interspersed with excellent research as well as warmth from one born in the same district as Winifred herself this is the definitive biography of a woman ahead of her time.

Marion Shaw is head of the English department at the University of Hull and she has written many literary criticism books on Tennyson. She lives in Kingston-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire.
Winifred Holtby is best remembered today as the author of the novel South Riding, continuously in print since its publication in 1936. Affectionately immortalized in Vera Brittain's Testament of Friendship, her short life and work are the subjects of this innovative major study. Instead of adopting a chronological approach, Shaw opts for a thematic one, tracing the course of Holtby's very full life through the various people she knew, each of whom reflect a different aspect of her personality.
