Series: Emma Lord
Baffled by a bizarre series of anonymous letters, Sheriff Milo Dodge calls upon Advocate owner Emma Lord for help. The mysterious letter writer alleges the wrongful arrest and conviction of the recently deceased Larry Peterson, who was long ago involved in a murder, and

claims the real killer has made a deathbed confession.

Neither Emma nor Milo recognizes the name of the supposed repentant killer. Surprisingly enough, even longtime Alpine resident Vida Runkel doesn't recall any such person, something so unlikely that they all conclude that the angry letter writer has invented a whole scenario for his or her own purposes. The trio dismisses the letters, but then an ominous fourth letter arrives, claiming that if swift action isn't taken, other deaths will soon follow--Milo's and Emma's deaths. And once word leaks that a vengeful killer might be on the loose, a ripple of panic runs through the Valley of the Sky.

Nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, the charming hamlet of Alpine is preparing for Thanksgiving, while Emma Lord, editor and publisher of The Alpine Advocate, feels her spirits sink. There will be no family or friends to share the day, but a call from Sheriff Milo Dodge on the Monday after the holiday weekend leaves her no time to wallow. Three alarming letters, sent to the sheriff from an anonymous writer, assert that the murder conviction of Alpine resident Larry Petersen ten years earlier was the result of a wrongful arrest. Adding to the miscarriage of justice, Petersen recently died behind bars. Then a fourth letter arrives, threatening retribution in the form of another death-most likely Emma's or Milo's. Mary Daheim's Emma Lord novel is a rich and authentic blend of small-town life and chilling menace.
