Douglas Mawson described Macquarie Island, south of New Zealand, as 'one of the wonder spots of the world' and this beautifully illustrated book shows why - in a simple, effective way for young readers. The island's story is told from its geological beginnings to today's conservation efforts and the text is accompanied by sepia-toned passages adapted from the journals of sailors, sealers and scientists. As the authors say, it is important to care for our precious places, no matter how small or far away they are.
