Epigenetics and Metabolomics, a new volume in the Translational Epigenetics series, offers a synthesized discussion of epigenetic control of metabolic activity, and systems-based approaches for better understanding these mechanisms. Over a dozen chapter authors provide an overview of epigenetics in translational medicine and metabolomics techniques, followed by analyses of epigenetic and metabolomic linkage mechanisms likely to result in effective identification of disease biomarkers, as well as new therapies targeting the removal of the inappropriate epigenetic alterations. Epigenetic interventions in cancer, brain damage, and neuroendocrine disease, among other disorders, are discussed in-depth, with an emphasis on exploring next steps for clinical translation and personalized healthcare.

Dr. Paban K. Agrawala Ph.D is a Scientist in the Radiation Epigenetics Division at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences in New Delhi, India, and previously was a Post doctoral Research Associate at Brookhaven National Lab, New York, USA. Dr. Agrawala is a member of the Indian Society for Radiation Biology, as well the Flowcytometry Society of India. He has published widely in such peer reviewed journals as the International Journal of Radiation Biology; Frontiers in Immunology; Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry; and the Journal of Environmental Pathology, Toxicology, and Oncology. His current research focuses on understanding the epigenetic changes, especially histone acetyltion status, following exposure to ionizing radiation. Dr. Poonam Rana Phd is a Senior Scientist at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences, under Ministry of Defence, Delhi, India. She received her PhD at the CCS Haryana Agricultural University in Hisar, India. Her focus of research is applications of metabolomics and imaging in identification of biomarkers for traumatic brain injury and radiation exposure during combat emergencies. She has published widely in such peer reviewed journals as the Scientific Reports, Metabolomics, Journal of Neuroendocrinology, International Journal of Radiation Biology, Journal of Neuroscience Research, and Chemical Biological Interactions. Dr. Tollefsbol is a Distinguished Professor of Biology and a Senior Scientist in the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, Integrative Center for Aging Research, Nutrition Obesity Research Center, University Wide Microbiome Center, and the Comprehensive Diabetes Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He is Director of the UAB Cell Senescence Culture Facility which he established in 1999. Dr. Tollefsbol trained as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Research Professor with members of the National Academy of Science at Duke University and the University of North Carolina. He earned doctorates in molecular biology and osteopathic medicine from the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center and his bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Houston. He has received prior funding from the NCI, NHLBI, NIMH and other federal institutes as well as the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR), and the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) among many other sources.
