This is the story of how Thor Heyderdahl and five other men crossed the Pacific Ocean on a balsa-wood raft in an extraordinary bid to prove Heyderdahl's theory that the Polynesians undertook the same feat on such a craft over 1000 years ago.

Reviews for The Kon-Tiki Expedition

Pioneer work in experimental maritime travel - and the book that, despite being based on the flawed theory that the Marquesas and other Pacific islands were first colonized from South America, caught the attention of the world. Brilliantly and seductively written. Nearly 30 years later when I was trying to drum up support for my own Brendan Voyage, which was leather boat not balsa raft, Atlantic not Pacific, the easiest shorthand was to describe my project as a 'sort of Irish Kon-Tiki'. Thank you, Thor Heyerdahl, and your companions. Review by Tim severin, whoxe books include 'In Search of Moby Dick: Quest for the White Whale' (Kirkus UK)
