Global economy and its business environment, and thus the world of work, have recently been influenced by demographic and social changes, globalisation, as well as rapid development and introduction of novel, sophisticated and previously unknown technologies and new business models, especially in the context of the so-called fourth industrial revolution. These changes pose a number of challenges in terms of maintaining and improving occupational safety and health (OSH) management performance, as traditional approaches to OSH management in new working environments may no longer be effective.

In view of the above, the overall goal of this book is to present new approaches and methods for improving the effectiveness of OSH management. They are based on state-of-the-art research and are in line with the latest trends and concepts in the field. The book focuses on five thematic areas, which are discussed in respective chapters:

1) Implementing the process approach to OSH management;

2) Improving OSH management systems with fuzzy cognitive maps;

3) Implementing strategic thinking approaches in relation to OSH management;

4) Integrating OSH management within the framework of the CSR concept;

5) Enhancing OSH management processes through the use of smart digital technologies.

The methods and solutions discussed may be considered as specific opportunities for the improvement to be taken into account in the processes of implementing and maintaining an OSH management system in light of the requirements of the new ISO 45001 standard.

Since 1984 he has worked for the Central Institute of Labour Protection (currently CIOP-PIB), initially as a researcher in the Department of Ergonomics and the Department of Safety Engineering, and then, as the Deputy Director for Management Systems and Certification. The scope of research carried out by Dr Daniel Podgórski included mainly the analysis of factors influencing the implementation of OHS management systems in enterprises and the application of selected KPIs to monitor the operational performance of OHS management processes. In recent years his scope of scientific interests and competences has been extended to cover the development and implementation of smart personal protective equipment (smart PPE) and other Internet of Things technologies to facilitate OSH risk management at Industry 4.0 workplaces.

Reviews for New Opportunities and Challenges in Occupational Safety and Health Management

"""For several decades, the traditional approaches to health and safety management at work have been hypothesized as not sufficiently effective. Therefore, new opportunities to improve the performance of OSH management systems, which are the result of recent research, should be explored and considered. The ideas and discussions presented in the book follow contemporary trends in management concepts and methods, as well as take into account the opportunities arising from the implementation of advanced digital technologies. The dominant trend is to pursue the vision of intelligent production and the digital workplace. The vision of production intellectualization demands from managers the ability to resolve a number of dilemmas and contradictions which are a natural consequence of multitasking management systems. This publication is a collection of knowledge intended for safety and health managers as well as managing directors on solutions and tools that can easily and effectively support them in decision-making processes aimed at improving safety and health performance in their company."" —Jan Klimek, Warsaw School of Economics, Warsaw"
