This book offers a fascinating exploration of the early history and evolution of the Mineral and Geoscience Department of Sarawak, originally known as the Geological Survey Department of Sarawak, established in 1949 with F. W. Roe as its first director. Initially based at Jawa Road (now Jalan P. Ramlee), the department operated under the British Borneo Territories, focusing on geological stratigraphy and the identification of mineral deposits essential for regional development. Funding and strategic planning were overseen by the directorate of Colonial Geological Surveys in London.

The book delves into the pioneering efforts of early geologists, who laid the groundwork for creating geological and mineral maps of Sarawak and Borneo. It highlights a pivotal transition in leadership when Mr Kho Chin Heng became the first Malaysian to head the department in 1968, significantly expanding geological mapping and mineral exploration programs with the recruitment of local geologists.

Under the leadership of Mr Chen Shiek Pei, who succeeded Mr Kho in 1985, the department grew exponentially, establishing various specialized sections, including mapping and hydrogeology. Today, the department has its own premises, houses a robust team of thirty geologists, seven geochemists, one geophysicist, and three mining engineers and plays a crucial role in mineral and groundwater development, working collaboratively with state and federal governments. This book not only chronicles the department's legacy but also celebrates its pivotal contributions to Sarawak's geological and economic development.
