Reviews for John Brown, Rose & the Midnight Cat

The sentimental story of widowed Rose and her sheepdog John Brown - a happy pair until a midnight cat appears on the scene and jealous John Brown refuses to take it in. But the dog comes round when Rose takes to her bed - all day and forever, she announces-and he realizes that the cat is what she needs to make her better. Brooks' illustrations are crosshatched and cozy, but Rose's country furniture and wallpaper designs provide their only texture. The double-page closeups of shaggy John Brown, the side of the house, or whatever, give you very little to look at, and their essential vacuousness is especially evident in this large (9O x 10) format.
