If you thought 'personal development' was a phenomenon of the anxious 90s, think again. Carnegie's seminal text was published in 1937 and has enjoyed uninterrupted sales ever since. His 'Nine Principles', illustrated by anecdote and dialogue, orbit around the notion that 'he who treads softly goes far' and firmly place the emphasis on charming your adversary into submission. Carnegie is almost entirely responsible for the lexicon of 'empowerment' and this is an interesting read on that basis alone - though possibly not on public transport. (Kirkus UK)
