Based on 25 years of research by the author and his colleagues, Growth and Hyperplasia of Cardiac Muscle Cells' shows that cardiac myogenesis differs fundamentally from that of skeletal muscle, even though the contractile mechanisms formed during the development of these tissues show obvious similarities. Individual chapters deal with reactive hyperplasia in the ventricular, the atrial and the conductive system muscle cells of damaged, infacted or overloaded hearts in lower and higher vertebrates. Unique data are presented on the proliferative behaviour of myocytes from the conductive system of the heart and from the pulmonary myocardium under conditions of experimental infaction and hypertrophy. This monograph will be of interest to cytologists, cell biologists, embryologists, pathologists and cardiologists working in the areas of cell differentiation, reproduction and regeneration, especially with respect to cardiomyocytes and other muscle cells.
