ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Foster is seven and an only child of loving parents. He and his Dad have a particularly strong bond, so when his dad starts to forget things, it seems like the funny jokes they share. What the reader rapidly recognises though, is that it is no laughing matter - Alzheimers is claiming his father. As his dad's condition worsens, Foster is left behind in all sorts of ways - as a child he is not consulted, not told what is happening, expected to behave (even as his father regresses to a childhood without boundaries) and generally alienated. While there can't be a happy ending in such a scenario, this is not a bleak book, nor does it hold out false hope, but it does have a strong message of resilience and eventually finding the way to cope. Lindy Jones

-----

Foster suddenly recognised the feeling that rolled over him and made him feel sick. It was this: Dad was going away somewhere all on his own. And Foster was already missing him... Foster Sumner is seven years old. He likes toy soldiers, tadpole hunting, going to school and the beach. Best of all, he likes listening to his dad's stories... But then Foster's dad starts forgetting things. No one is too worried at first. Foster and Dad giggle about it. But the forgetting gets worse. And suddenly no one is laughing anymore... A heartbreaking story about what it means to forget and to be forgotten.
