Following her husband's death, Minna runs a small boarding house in Torquay and brings up her son, Tim. Tim becomes a journalist for the local paper, struggling to get by-lines and hoping to make it to a national some day.

However, the outbreak of the Great War disrupts his life. Tim resists volunteering for the sake of his mother who can't bear to see her only son go to war, but eventually his guilt at not helping his country makes him sign up for the Royal Flying Corps. Sent home after a breakdown, he discovers his true love, but she is pressured to marry another.

Shakespearean actor, Sydney lifeguard, Scottish newspaper journalist, American high school graduate, playwright and now number one best selling novelist, Iain Blair has packed more than most into his sixty something years. But while millions of regular fans enjoy his 29 published novels, none has ever heard of Iain. Why? Because they only know him as romantic novelist Emma Blair. Clare Higgins is a stage, film and television actress. She is a graduate from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s Clare consolidated her reputation as a dynamic stage actress, both in London and on Broadway, winning three Olivier awards. In 2012, she appeared in Downton Abbey as Mrs Bartlett, and in 2013 she appeared in the Doctor Who mini-episode 'The Night of the Doctor'.
