No war has caused greater suffering than World War II on Germany's Eastern Front. Victory in the war cost the Red Army over 29 million casualties, whose collective fate was not properly documented. Among the many milions of soldiers who made up that toll, was a number of Red Army general officers. Many of them perished on the battlefield or in prison camps at the hands of their German tormentors. Others fell victim to Stalinist oppression. Aleksander Maslov memorializes these victims using formerly secret Soviet archival materials and interviews with families of the victims.
