Marian Barnes is Professor of Social Policy at the University of Brighton. After working in research and development posts in local government social services, she worked at the Universities of Birmingham, Leeds and Sheffield. She has worked primarily as a researcher and has had major responsibilities for research management and development. In addition to the substantive areas of research interest, she has also been involved in developing approaches to collaborative research with service users and has an interest in narrative research methods. Marian teaches postgraduate courses and supervises research students. Dr Tula Brannelly is Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing at Massey University in New Zealand.Tula teaches mental health at undergraduate level in the Bachelor of Nursing, and postgraduate in Masters papers in the Masters of Nursing and supervises students at Masters and PhD level. Tula's background in mental health practice in inpatient, community, NHS and NGO providers fuelled her interest in values and ethics in mental health practice. This led her to do an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and PhD in Social Policy, 'Citizenship and care for people with dementia', both at the University of Birmingham. Dr Lizzie Ward is Senior Research Fellow in the School of Applied Social Science at the University of Brighton. Lizzie worked for 12 years in the voluntary sector before coming to the University of Brighton in 1997 to study, undertaking first a BA Humanities and continuing as a postgraduate. After completing her PhD, Feminism, New Labour and Lone Motherhood, Lizzie joined SASS in September 2007. Lizzie has developed partnership projects with Age UK Brighton & Hove, working closely with Dr Beatrice Gahagan, senior manager at Age UK Brighton & Hove. The partnership has undertaken research on older people and alcohol use and is currently working on a project about older people and well-being. This is a participatory project and involves working with a team of older co-researchers who are Age UK Brighton & Hove volunteers. Together she and the editors developed the research design and are carrying out the research over the next two years. Dr Nicki Ward is a Lecturer at the School of Social Policy, Institute of Applied Social Studies at the University of Birmingham. Her role now, as a social work lecturer, enables her to combine her interests in social work, social care and social justice.
