Engineering dynamics and vibrations has become an essential topic for ensuring structural integrity and operational functionality in different engineering areas. However, practical problems regarding dynamics and vibrations are in many cases handled without success despite large expenditures.

This book covers a wide range of topics from the basics to advances in dynamics and vibrations; from relevant engineering challenges to the solutions; from engineering failures due to inappropriate accounting of dynamics to mitigation measures and utilization of dynamics. It lays emphasis on engineering applications utilizing state-of-the-art information.

Junbo Jia is an engineering expert at Aker Solutions, Norway. He is currently a committee member of ISO TC67/SC7 Offshore Structures and an invited expert group member of Eurocode 3. He has been invited as guest professor and key speaker by various organizations and research institutes. Dr. Junbo Jia has received several national and international awards such as the Vice Admiral E.L. Cochrane award from the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and the Best Paper Award from the journal Ships and Offshore Structures. He is the sole author of three Springer monographs and is listed in several global versions of the Who's Who publications. Dr. Jia is an elected member of Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences. Jeom Kee Paik, Dr. Eng., DHC (ULieg), CEng, FREng, FRINA, LFSNAME, is Professor of Marine Technology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London, UK, and Professor of Safety Design and Engineering in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Pusan National University, South Korea. He also holds positions in other academic institutions. Prof. Paik serves as director of the International Centre for Advanced Safety Studies and as editor-in-chief of Ships and Offshore Structures. He has authored several books published between 2003 and 2018. He has received both the William Froude Medal from the UK Royal Institution of Naval Architects (2015) and the David W. Taylor Medal from the US Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (2013), the two most prestigious medals in the global maritime community, in recognition of his contributions to naval architecture and ocean engineering, along with several other merit awards. Prof. Paik is an elected member of Royal Academy of Engineering United Kingdom.

Reviews for Engineering Dynamics and Vibrations

Jia and Paik have curated a useful update on recent developments in important areas of engineering dynamics, vibrations, impact, and noise. This technical book contains ten chapters contributed by various authors from around the globe who are well-known in the field. After an introduction to the book's scope, chapters discuss non-linear structural responses in various engineering applications, from offshore drilling to bridges. Chapters delve into topics such as hydrocarbon explosions on offshore platforms, stochastic dynamic analysis of marine structures, and the mitigation of stresses and vibrations in deep-water steel riser design by the introduction of a lazy wave geometry. Case studies from later chapters include ground motion prediction equations for energy-based demand parameters with a regional application to northwestern Turkey, and an analysis of seismic mitigation of single pylon cable-stayed bridges. The figures and tables are straightforward and well designed, enhancing understanding of the text. The text is suitable for mechanical engineering students as well as professionals. Each chapter includes a large number of references. - CHOICE, September 2019 Vol. 57 No. 1
