For a fine and reasonably short introduction to the crusading movement, this cannot be bettered. In the second edition of his classic Crusading and the Crusader States, Andrew Jotischky effortlessly weaves together a detailed chronological narrative, along with thematic segments and up-to-date analysis - and, of course, it is all attractively written for a student audience.
