Catalysis for Sustainability: Goals, Challenges, and Impacts explores the intersection between catalytic science and sustainable technologies as a means to addressing current economic, social, and environmental problems. Thomas P. Umile joined the Division of Natural and Computational Sciences at Gwynedd Mercy University in 2014 as assistant professor of chemistry. He completed his undergraduate studies in 2006 at the University of Scranton, where he studied microwave-assisted organic reactions and green chemistry with Michael C. Cann. Afterward, he joined the laboratory of John T. Groves at Princeton University, receiving his PhD in 2012 for the development of chlorine dioxide-generating metalloporphyrin catalysts. Prior to his faculty appointment, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Villanova University, where he taught organic chemistry and worked with Kevin P.C. Minbiole to isolate and characterize bioactive small molecules from microbial sources. His academic interests include the isolation and characterization of natural products and infusing undergraduate courses with green chemistry and sustainability.
