About Abbey’s Bookshop
Founded in 1968 and still
an Australian-owned independent, Abbey’s is
the perfect place to satisfy your literary leanings or to find something
special for that someone special in your life.
Abbey’s can best be likened
to five specialist bookshops packed into one, as well as being a general
bookshop in most genres. Our range of
titles in History, Science, Philosophy, Classics and Crime
rival the best specialist bookshops in the world.
We also have extensive sections for General Fiction, Biography,
Travel, Music, Art, Religion, Psychology, Reference, Writing and Publishing
and Children’s Books. Other niche areas include Food and Wine,
Gardening, Theatre and Film, Plays, Poetry and Sociology.
This is all in addition to the enormous range of language titles upstairs
on
the first floor in our Language
Book Centre and Australia’s largest range of Science Fiction, Fantasy
and Horror just three doors from Abbey’s at our Galaxy
Bookshop at 143 York Street.
We don’t just carry the
latest bestsellers. Our real strength is in our backlist. With books
from publishers throughout the world, we have
a reputation for carrying most Cambridge University Press titles,
as well as a wide range from Australian, American and British university
presses. We also stock most Penguin
titles, including the entire range of Penguin Classics.
We have over 40,000 different
titles in stock at any time in Abbey’s
and 15,000 in Language Book Centre. This means 55,000 tiles in stock -
not the number we would like to have in stock, or the number on our database,
or the number on our suppliers’ databases! We actually have them in the
shop for you to buy immediately or have shipped within 24 hours.

Beaches, Inner West and North-west destinations, while Eastern and Southern

Our Service
In the world of bookselling,
Abbey’s has become an institution in Sydney
over the last 38 years. One of the main reasons for this is our commitment
to providing excellent customer service. This is demonstrated by the
four
dedicated information terminals located at the front of the shop and
other information and service areas throughout the store.
We have eight separate phone lines, so customers phoning us rarely get
the engaged signal. For those out of town, our freecall number 1800 4
BOOKS (1800 4 26657) helps overcome the tyranny of distance.
