ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- I do like a bird book, and I do very much like this one! David Hollands has written an engaging text, full of personal observations and anecdotes about these groups of birds, with excellent field notes and identification guides to the seventeen cranes, herons, egrets and storks which breed in Australia. Yet it is his clear and beautiful photographs which are the true joy. The birds are photographed in their natural habitats and behaviours, occasionally with fascinating action sequences. He also includes some of his photos of overseas members of the families for comparison. Birdwatchers will appreciate this fine book (and perhaps with a touch of envy!) but anyone with a general interest in birds will get a lot from this nicely produced book. Lindy Jones

David has spent 16 years traversing australia to find, study and photograph the 17 species which make up this book. His passion and enthusiasm for his subjects shine through the text; lively, accurate, informative and beautifully written, not only about the birds but about the expeditions to find them. The book is richly illustrated with over 200 of David's photographs, covering all aspects of the birds' lives.
