Sometimes finding refuge can be deadly. When the remains of a body wash up on the riverbank alongside his houseboat, Makana is caught up in what looks like a series of ritual murders of young refugees. The anxious parents of Mourad Hafiz have hired him to track down their missing undergraduate son. But when the authorities show little interest in investigating the refugee killings, Makana once again feels the pull of his Sudanese past, and is impelled to seek justice for the victims himself. Enlisting the help of the exacting - and beguiling - pathologist, Doctora Siham he soon discovers that his two cases may be connected in dangerous and unexpected ways...
